I’m Silvana Rossi, the designer behind Sil Vanilla.

With a background in Fashion and Textile Design, I’ve always been drawn to the beauty of patterns, color and the details that make everyday objects special.

My creative journey has taken me through fashion, handmade crafts and home decor, shaping the way I see and approach design today.

Inspired by nature, folk art and vintage textiles, my work combines stylized shapes, hand-drawn motifs, organic textures and earthy color palettes to create patterns with character and a touch of unexpected charm.

Today, I work with brands and creative people to bring thoughtful ideas to life through pattern design.

I'm so happy to have joined @thefabricshop.au !
It's exciting to see my designs find a home on a new platform dedicated to beautiful fabrics and the people who love creating with them.

My studio brings together designs inspired by nature, folk art and vintage textiles, from florals and botanicals to coordinating prints.

My design for the @spoonflower Added Texture Design Challenge.

I’m reworking some of my patterns to complete a forest-inspired collection, and decided to give this botanical stripe a little extra texture with linen and grasscloth details for a more natural fiber look.

I’ve also added new colorways to my Spoonflower shop, now available to explore!

My entries for this year’s #slowdownartcomp2026

Two colorways of the same design because I simply couldn’t decide which one I loved more. My other two ideas are still unfinished, time is ticking, and there are some last-minute mum duties to take care of… so here we are with these two!

I wanted to have fun and start with an analogue process, so I chose collage. I dug out a box of paper scraps I’ve been collecting since I left uni over 20 years ago. I’ve used these bits and pieces for all sorts of things over the years, and somehow, I still have plenty left!

Then I just let my hands cut freely, making shapes without a fixed idea of where I was going. As I went along, I started seeing little fantasy scenes under the sea taking shape, with imaginary underwater algae and organic forms. I liked the idea, so I followed that feeling and let the shapes lead the way.

Halfway through, I even started thinking about turning this into a 100-day project… although I’m not so sure about that just yet!

I’m happy with how these turned out, but what I love most is that they’ve made me want to keep exploring collage, especially as a way to bring more analogue techniques and unexpected discoveries into my surface pattern design process.

There are so many amazing entries this year, and I’m just happy to have taken part, tried something new, and had a LOT of fun along the way.

I started this new chapter two and a half years ago, true to my style, a little quietly. But over time, I’ve been gaining confidence, and I felt it was time to show more of myself.

I’ve always felt more comfortable letting my work speak for me, but I decided it was time to step outside my comfort zone and push myself to be on the other side of the camera.

It was quite an experience, and I feel it’s part of the growth, both personally and professionally.

Here’s to one more step. 🌱

There’s something special about seeing a pattern leave the screen and become something you can actually touch.

I recently received a few fabric samples from @spoonflower and I was especially curious to see how some of my patterns would work at different scales.

I’m really happy with how the colors translated to fabric. They look very close to what I see on screen, which was lovely to see. The details also came out really crisp and clear, which I’m very happy with.

But the biggest thing for me was being able to judge the scale in real life. Scale can be tricky. There isn’t always one “right” scale, as it depends on the design, the application and, of course, personal taste. But seeing a pattern printed on an actual piece of fabric makes those decisions so much easier.

It’s such a simple thing, but it’s one of the parts of surface pattern design I love most: seeing something that started as a drawing on a screen become something real. 🌿
